Livestock guardian dogs have, and still are, playing a crucial role in safeguarding livestock from predators.

The 12 breeds we discussed in this article, including the Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, Maremma Sheepdog, Kangal, Akbash, Komondor, Kuvasz, Pyrenean Mastiff, Sarplaninac, Tibetan Mastiff, Bulgarian Shepherd Dog, and Central Asian Shepherd, display a wide range of physical and temperamental traits that make them well-suited for different climates and livestock types.

Their long history as loyal guardians, along with their protective instincts, makes them valuable assets to farmers and ranchers worldwide.

We recommend getting and staring them young, but if you are worried about them not being properly trained, then doing what we did might be helpful if you have a large herd.

We started with two well trained (by trained I mean raised around goats and other livestock including, chickens and kid goats) and we let them breed. When the puppies were old enough to be weaned, they went in their assigned pastures with their herds.

As the pups grew into mature adults the herd became a part of their family.

They have never shown signs of aggression towards any of the the goats or the kid goats.

This is especially vital in our case because one half of our land lays host to our miniature Pygmy/Nigerian dwarf herd and their kids are especially tiny and vulnerable when first born.

I hope this made your decision somewhat easier. I know for us, as long as we have a farm, we will have our beloved and trusted loyal companions by our side.
